With the yesterdays obstruction to the opening of new chapters in the Croatia’s negotiations to full EU membership, the following question arose: Did Slovenia open the Pandora’s box?
A logical conclusion would be that in the future we will be seeing ‘veto’ as a measure frequently used when solving bilateral questions. The EU countries will not only use the veto as an intimidation tactics, but will also enforce this mechanism to solve opened questions with the non-member countries.
The next logical conclusion is that we will be seeing a rerun of this episode at least one more time. That would be in the “right for self-naming” dispute which Greece is having with Macedonia. But contrary to the Bucharest NATO summit in April 2008, this time Greece will not be considered as the spoiled Europe’s brat. Slovenia has made the leading case this time. Greece will just confirm the new reality.
Enforcement of good neighbouring relations - the European way.
